Illegally made fentanyl can appear in unregulated powders or counterfeit pills. You cannot reliably identify it by appearance, smell or taste. A familiar pill marking is not proof of a genuine medicine.

Recognize the emergency
A person who will not wake or has slow, absent or abnormal breathing needs emergency help. Do not rule out opioid exposure because they expected a stimulant.

Naloxone & checking
Carry accessible naloxone if you may witness an overdose and learn the product instructions. Fentanyl strips have limits: a negative result does not guarantee a drug is free of fentanyl or other hazards.
